Anomaly / Behavior based detection
IDS learns model of “normal” behavior, then can detect things that deviate too far from normal - eg unusual URLs being accessed, user specific- login times / usual work hours, normal files accessed.
Can also look for things that a hacker might specifically do (eg, HISTFILE commands, accessing /proc).
If someone is inside the network- If action could be suspicious, increase log verbosity for that user.
Firewall rules
- Brute force (trying to log in with a lot of failures).
- Detecting port scanning (could look for TCP SYN packets with no following SYN ACK/ half connections).
- Antivirus software notifications.
- Large amounts of upload traffic.
Logs to look at
- DNS queries to suspicious domains.
- HTTP headers could contain wonky information.
- Metadata of files (eg. author of file) (more forensics?).
- Traffic volume.
- Traffic patterns.
- Execution logs.
Things to know about attackers
- Slow attacks are harder to detect.
- Attacker can spoof packets that look like other types of attacks, deliberately create a lot of noise.
- Attacker can spoof IP address sending packets, but can check TTL of packets and TTL of reverse lookup to find spoofed addresses.
- Correlating IPs with physical location (is difficult and inaccurate often).
Indicator of Compromise (IOC)?
Indicator of compromise (often shared amongst orgs/groups).
How do you use IoC to help you in an investigation?
IoCs (indicators of compromise) — file hashes, malicious IPs/domains, URLs, registry keys, mutexes, filenames — are used to detect and scope an incident. You sweep logs, EDR, and network data for matches to confirm a compromise, identify which hosts are affected, and build the timeline; the same indicators feed detection rules (SIEM/IDS) to catch recurrence. IoCs are often shared between organizations (e.g. via threat feeds/STIX) so others can hunt for the same activity.

OSINT
What is OSINT?
Open-Source Intelligence — collecting and analyzing information from publicly available sources (search engines, WHOIS/DNS, certificate transparency logs, social media, code repositories, leaked-credential dumps, Shodan/Censys) to build a picture of a target without touching its systems directly.
How do you use it?
In recon, to map an organization’s footprint before active testing — enumerating domains/subdomains, IP ranges, employee names and emails (for phishing), technologies in use, exposed services and files, and leaked credentials. Defensively, the same techniques reveal what an attacker can already see about you, so you can reduce that exposure.

You’ve identified an active c2 channel in your network. What do you do?
Follow incident response, and don’t tip off the attacker prematurely. Scope it first — identify affected hosts, the C2 domain/IP, and how it got in — while capturing volatile evidence (memory, network captures) for forensics. Then contain (isolate affected hosts, block the C2 at the firewall/DNS/proxy), eradicate (remove malware, close the initial vector, rotate compromised credentials), and recover (restore clean systems and verify). Finish with a post-mortem and new detections. Time the containment deliberately, since cutting C2 too early can alert the attacker to escalate or destroy evidence.

What are some common ways an attacker may move laterally throughout the network? ( stupid terms: move east/west in a network)
Credential reuse/theft (dumped hashes, pass-the-hash / pass-the-ticket, cached creds), remote-access protocols (RDP, SSH, SMB/PsExec, WMI, WinRM), exploiting internal service vulnerabilities, abusing Active Directory (Kerberoasting, token/ticket theft), and pivoting through already-compromised hosts. Detection relies on spotting unusual internal authentication and east-west traffic patterns.

What is considered as an investigation?
An act of spending time and/or effort trying to find more information or an answer or a thing.
What is a Cybersecurity event vs incident?
An event will be anything that happens related to cybersecurity, incident, will be an event that may cause damage or create risk to assets.
How do you use Python to write log parsers and/or utilities in scripting languages?
Read the logs, extract fields with string operations or regular expressions (the re module), and normalize them into structured records (dicts, or csv/json output) for filtering, counting, and correlation. Typical building blocks: iterate lines, re.search/re.findall for patterns (IPs, timestamps, status codes), collections.Counter/defaultdict for aggregation, and datetime for building timelines. For large files, stream line-by-line rather than loading everything into memory, and feed results into a SIEM or alerting logic.
What is DevOps? Why is it useful?
DevOps is a methodology that combines the software development part and the technology operation part. It makes software delivering, fixing bugs and providing updates easier and faster for both developer and operator.
What is Jenkins? Why use it? When do you use it? How do you use it? How is it helping the company?
Jenkins is an open-source automation server used mainly for CI/CD. It watches source control and automatically builds, tests, and deploys code through configurable pipelines. Teams use it to catch integration problems early, standardize and speed up releases, and remove manual deployment steps. From a security angle it’s also where you wire in automated scanning (SAST/DAST/dependency checks) — and, because it often holds credentials and can deploy to production, it is itself a high-value asset to secure.
What is Ansible? Why use it? When do you use it? How do you use it? How is it helping the company?
Ansible is an open-source configuration-management and automation tool. Using declarative YAML “playbooks,” it configures servers, installs software, and orchestrates deployments over SSH with no agent required on the targets. It’s used for consistent, repeatable, idempotent infrastructure changes at scale — including security hardening and patch rollouts applied uniformly across many hosts.
How do you automate tasks?
Identify repetitive, well-defined work, script it (Python/Bash/PowerShell), and trigger it on a schedule (cron) or by event (webhooks, CI pipelines, SOAR playbooks). In security operations, common examples are log parsing and alerting, enrichment and triage of indicators, scheduled scans, and configuration management with tools like Ansible — always with logging and error handling so the automation stays auditable.
What is an investigation methodology?
An investigation methodology is a framework or guidelines that gave you instruction or point you an direction at what you should do during an investigation.

If there is a suspicious network security event found and you are assigned to investigate:
- What will you first do?
- Depends on the severity of the event, I will either isolate the system or start collecting information I need.
- What will you need to do?
- I’ll need to notify proper personnel who is in charge, escalate the severity of the event if needed, document every events and the time it happened.
- What info do you need?
- If possible, I’ll try to collect every information that I can get. If not, I’ll try to get at least the logs from security devices like IDS or SIEM and make sure they are properly timestamped.
- What’s your plan to investigate?
- I’ll follow the incident response procedure that I learnt in CISSP, which is notification, escalation, reporting, system isolation, forensic analysis, evidence handling
- Who do you need to talk to?
- Manager of the security operation team, the manager of the system where the event happened, and legal counsel if required

- System owners, all the people that are impacted

- A timeline of when each events happened and how each of them are related, also provide a brief information about what the impact might be if possible

- It will be evaluated by all the actions made by the attacker along with the all the information we gathers, basically it will be determined by experience

- By finding some related parts in the information that we gathered, for example, a same source IP may indicates that two events are done by a same user.

- When we find the answer for the reason why we did this investigation, or when the cost of the investigation is exceeding the value of knowing the result of this investigation.

- Document everything and make sure is preserved for reference in the future if similar incidents happens

- Finding the root cause of the attack and see if there’s any characteristic that will only appears in this type of attack, after identified the indicators of attack, I’ll see if I can create firewall rules or filters to keep an eye on similar incidents that happens in the future

Often there will be stress to investigate suspected serious security incident in a tight timeline, if you only have limited info to start with, but you are required to get this analysis done in 2 days,

- I will try to set out some goals and list the tasks that need to be done then prioritize them and start with the most important tasks.
